Short answer

Bursa removal is considered when olecranon bursitis persists, recurs, limits elbow use, or remains infected despite appropriate non-surgical treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main issue
Persistent, recurrent, function-limiting, or infected swelling may prompt discussion.
Before assessment
Avoid elbow pressure and seek care for redness, drainage, fever, or rapid worsening.

What the decision means

The olecranon bursa is a small fluid-filled sac over the point of the elbow. Repeated pressure, injury, inflammatory disease, or infection can make it swollen. A clinician usually reviews the pattern of swelling, skin changes, fluid findings, and response to measures such as protection, activity changes, medication, aspiration, or antibiotics when indicated. Surgery is not automatically needed for a first episode or for uncomplicated swelling that is improving. If infection is suspected, treatment decisions require prompt assessment because drainage and antibiotics may be needed before, with, or instead of removal.

What to do before surgery is discussed

Avoid leaning on the elbow and use padding during activities that put pressure on it. Keep any wound clean and follow the prescribed plan; do not repeatedly drain the swelling yourself. Record how quickly it returns, whether movement is restricted, and whether pain or redness changes. At a surgical consultation, ask whether the bursa can be treated without removal, what tissue would be removed, how the incision will be protected, and how elbow movement will be restored afterward. Recovery planning may include wound care and gradual return to pressure-bearing activities.

When to seek care quickly

Seek prompt medical care for increasing redness or warmth, drainage, fever, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, or difficulty moving the elbow. These features can indicate infection or another problem requiring examination. An open wound over the elbow, spreading redness, or feeling generally unwell should not be managed by waiting for a routine surgical appointment.

Questions for your doctor

What is causing my bursitis to persist or return? Has the fluid been assessed for infection or crystals? Which non-surgical options remain reasonable? What findings would make removal worthwhile, and what wound-care and activity restrictions should I expect?

Questions people ask

Is every swollen elbow bursa removed?

No. Many episodes are managed with protection, pressure avoidance, treatment of the cause, and monitoring when appropriate.

Can bursitis return after treatment?

It can return, particularly when repeated pressure or an underlying inflammatory condition continues, so prevention and follow-up matter.
