Fibrocystic breast changes can include lumpy tissue, tenderness, and fluid-filled cysts that fluctuate with hormonal changes. Ultrasound can examine a specific area and show whether a palpable lump is fluid-filled or solid. It may also help explain why one spot feels different from the surrounding tissue. The result is considered with your symptoms, examination, age, and any earlier breast imaging.

Make an appointment for a new, persistent, enlarging, or distinctly different lump. Keep a note of when tenderness or lumpiness appears in relation to your menstrual cycle, but do not delay assessment while waiting for a change. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormone medicines, and previous breast procedures. Bring earlier reports if you have them.

Seek prompt care for a firm lump that persists, skin dimpling, a new nipple inversion, spontaneous bloody discharge, or swelling in the armpit. Redness, warmth, fever, or rapidly worsening pain also needs timely assessment because infection can occur alongside other breast changes.
