When Is Breast Ultrasound Recommended for Fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and supporting tissue. It is often smooth and mobile, but touch alone cannot establish what a lump is. Ultrasound can describe whether a finding is solid, its borders, and how it relates to nearby tissue. Those details help a clinician decide whether observation is suitable or whether tissue sampling or another review should be considered.

Arrange assessment for a new lump or a lump that changes in size, shape, or feel. Mention your age, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, family history, and any previous imaging. Do not repeatedly press the area to test it, as this can make it sore. Keep follow-up appointments if your clinician recommends checking that the finding remains stable.

Seek prompt medical review for a rapidly enlarging lump, skin pulling or dimpling, a new nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or swelling in the armpit. New breast symptoms deserve assessment even if you have previously been told that a lump was a fibroadenoma.
