When is breast MRI recommended for breast cancer?

MRI produces detailed images of breast tissue and may show the size or distribution of a known cancer more clearly than other tests. It can help the team assess another area in the same breast or the opposite breast, and it may be used before surgery or after treatment when the clinical question calls for it. MRI can also produce findings that are not cancer, so an abnormal area may lead to targeted imaging or biopsy rather than an immediate treatment change.

Ask what clinical question the scan is intended to answer and whether contrast will be injected. Tell the radiology team about kidney disease, allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, implanted metal, and difficulty in enclosed spaces. Bring previous breast images when requested so the radiologist can compare them. Ask when the report will be reviewed and how it will affect the next decision.

Tell your cancer team promptly about a new lump, rapidly changing breast swelling, wound problems, fever, or new pain after a procedure or treatment. Do not delay assessment while waiting for MRI. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or fainting during or after contrast administration.
