When is breast biopsy recommended for intraductal papilloma?

An intraductal papilloma is a small growth within a milk duct. It can cause clear or bloody discharge from one nipple, although symptoms vary. Ultrasound, mammography, or other breast imaging may suggest a duct-related lesion but cannot always establish its exact tissue type. A needle biopsy collects tissue for laboratory examination and helps guide observation or removal.

Arrange the recommended breast imaging and tell the clinician about discharge, pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, and previous breast operations. Do not squeeze the nipple repeatedly to check discharge, because this can irritate the duct. If biopsy is advised, ask how it is guided, how to prepare, and how the result will affect the next decision.

Arrange a breast assessment for spontaneous discharge, discharge from one breast, a new lump, or a change around the nipple. Seek prompt care for bloody discharge or skin changes. After biopsy, contact the care team about increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, or bleeding that does not settle with pressure.

Ask which imaging feature led to the recommendation, whether the lesion is in a single duct, and whether needle sampling or removal is more suitable. Ask when the pathology result will be available and what follow-up is needed if the result is benign.
