When is a breast biopsy recommended for breast cancer?

Imaging can show a lump, distortion, calcification, or another change, but it cannot always identify the cells causing it. During a biopsy, a clinician removes samples using a needle, usually with imaging guidance. A pathologist examines the tissue and may report whether cells are benign, pre-cancerous, or cancerous, along with features that affect treatment decisions. Many breast changes are not cancer, so a biopsy recommendation is a request for a clear diagnosis, not a cancer diagnosis.

Ask which imaging finding is being sampled, how the needle will be guided, and whether you should change medicines that affect bleeding. Tell the team about allergies, pregnancy, implanted devices, and medicines or supplements. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the breast. Afterward, follow instructions for the dressing and activity, and ask when and how the pathology result will be shared.

Contact the clinic for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, fever, or worsening pain. Seek urgent care for severe shortness of breath, fainting, or uncontrolled bleeding. A new bruise or mild tenderness can occur, but the team should know if symptoms are getting worse rather than gradually easing.
