When is brain tumour surgery recommended for meningioma?

Many meningiomas are found during scans for another reason and may be watched with repeat imaging when they are small, stable and not causing problems. Surgery becomes more relevant when headaches, seizures, weakness, vision changes or cognitive changes are linked to pressure or irritation. The tumour’s position matters because some are close to nerves, blood vessels or areas controlling important functions. The surgical goal may be complete removal, partial removal to protect function, or tissue diagnosis.

Ask the treating team how the scan findings and any change over time affect the recommendation. Bring previous imaging for comparison and describe changes in seizures, balance, strength, vision or concentration. Discuss observation, surgery and focused radiation where relevant, including recovery, possible neurological effects and what follow-up imaging would involve. A second specialist opinion can help when the tumour is near a critical structure.

Seek emergency care for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden weakness or numbness, new loss of vision, severe confusion, repeated vomiting, or a sudden severe headache. Do not drive yourself if a seizure or major neurological change has occurred.
