When is brain tumour surgery recommended for glioma?

Glioma is a group of tumours with different cell types and grades, so an operation is not planned from the scan alone. MRI features, growth pattern, tumour position and symptoms are considered alongside the person’s health and treatment goals. Tissue obtained during surgery can establish the tumour type and grade and may guide later treatment. If the tumour lies close to areas controlling speech, movement, sensation or vision, preserving function may limit the amount removed.

Arrange a consultation with a neurosurgical and oncology team. Take your scan images if available, a medicine list, and a record of seizures, headaches, balance problems or changes in thinking. Ask whether the plan is removal, biopsy, observation or another treatment. Discuss expected hospital care, rehabilitation, the pathology process and how the result will affect radiotherapy or medicines.

Get emergency help for a new seizure, prolonged seizure, sudden one-sided weakness, new speech or vision difficulty, confusion, repeated vomiting, or a severe rapidly worsening headache. Prompt assessment is needed for these neurological changes.
