When is brachytherapy recommended for eye melanoma?

Eye melanoma, often called uveal or ocular melanoma, develops in structures within or around the eye. In plaque brachytherapy, a small radiation device is temporarily placed on the outside wall of the eye next to the tumour. The plaque delivers focused radiation while the eye remains in place.

The eye specialist and radiation team consider the tumour's location, size, proximity to the optic nerve or central retina, vision in the affected and other eye, and general health. Surgery, focused external radiation, or removal of the eye may be discussed when plaque treatment is not suitable or would not provide the needed control.

Bring your eye history, medicines, allergies, and details of previous eye procedures. Ask how the tumour's position affects vision, whether the plaque can reach it safely, and what follow-up imaging will be needed. Plan transport and support if the procedure involves anaesthesia or reduced vision afterward.

Use prescribed eye drops as directed and avoid rubbing or pressing on the eye during recovery. Keep every eye examination, because vision changes can develop during treatment or later. Tell the team about new flashes, floaters, shadows, pain, redness, or reduced vision.

Contact the treating eye team urgently for sudden loss of vision, a new curtain-like shadow, severe eye pain, marked redness, increasing swelling, or discharge. New flashes or a sudden increase in floaters also warrant prompt assessment.

Follow wound and dressing instructions after plaque placement or removal. Do not miss a review because the eye can look reasonably well while the retina, optic nerve, or other treated structures still need monitoring.
