When is bone-strengthening therapy recommended for bone metastases?

Bone metastases can disturb the normal balance between bone breakdown and repair. Medicines used for bone strengthening can slow this process and help protect areas weakened by cancer. They may be offered when scans or other assessments show bone involvement, whether or not pain is present. The treatment supports the skeleton; it does not replace treatment directed at the cancer itself.

The choice depends on kidney function, calcium levels, dental health, other medicines, previous treatments, and the location and behaviour of the bone metastases. Your team may combine it with pain relief, radiotherapy, cancer treatment, exercise guidance, or advice about preventing falls.

Give the team a complete medicine list and mention kidney problems, dental infections, loose teeth, planned dental work, and previous jaw problems. Blood tests may be needed before treatment and during follow-up. Keep dental care gentle and regular, and ask before having an extraction or other invasive procedure. Report new bone pain rather than waiting for the next appointment, because the team may need to assess for a fracture or pressure on a nerve.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe back or neck pain, new limb weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to stand after an injury, or sudden severe pain in an arm, leg, or hip. Contact your team quickly for new jaw pain, exposed jawbone, facial swelling, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms can have several causes but may need rapid assessment.
