When is blood pressure medication recommended for angina?

Angina is chest discomfort caused by the heart muscle not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood for its workload. High blood pressure makes the heart pump against greater resistance and can contribute to artery disease over time. Depending on the person’s blood pressure, pulse, other conditions, and current medicines, a clinician may choose a treatment that relaxes blood vessels, slows the heartbeat, or reduces the force of contraction. The aim is broader than symptom relief.

Take the prescribed dose consistently and measure blood pressure only as your care team recommends. Rise slowly if you feel light-headed, and report fainting, marked dizziness, ankle swelling, or an unusually slow heartbeat. Do not stop a heart or blood pressure medicine suddenly without advice.
