When is eyelid surgery recommended for droopy eyelids?

Droopy eyelids, also called dermatochalasis, involve excess or lax upper-eyelid skin. It can create a hooded appearance and may interfere with the upper field of vision, eyelid comfort, makeup application, or reading. Blepharoplasty removes or reshapes selected tissue; it does not correct every cause of a low eyelid or brow. A clinician first distinguishes excess skin from eyelid muscle weakness, brow descent, swelling, or an eye condition.

Book an examination with an ophthalmologist or appropriately trained surgeon. Describe tasks affected, such as driving, reading, or keeping the eyes open, and bring information about dry eyes, glaucoma, previous eye surgery, allergies, and medicines that affect bleeding. Assessment may include eyelid measurements and visual-field testing when function is affected. Discuss the planned area, scars, recovery, eye-surface care, and whether brow treatment or another option is more suitable.

Arrange prompt medical review for sudden eyelid drooping, double vision, unequal pupils, facial weakness, severe headache, eye pain, or a new change in vision. These features can point to an eye or nerve problem rather than ordinary excess skin. After surgery, urgent assessment is needed for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, rapidly increasing swelling, or heavy bleeding.

Ask whether excess skin is the main cause, how vision will be assessed, what recovery restrictions apply, and how dry-eye symptoms may be managed. Clarify which changes surgery can address, the possible need for further treatment, and when follow-up will occur.
