When is benzoyl peroxide treatment recommended for acne?

Benzoyl peroxide works on the skin surface and inside follicles by reducing acne-associated bacteria and helping clear the environment around blocked pores. It can be useful when red, tender spots are present and may also be paired with another acne medicine. It does not treat every acne-like rash, and deep painful lumps, scarring, or widespread disease may need a clinician-led plan rather than self-treatment alone.

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin according to the product instructions or your clinician's plan. Start less often if advised, then increase only as tolerated. Dryness, peeling, redness, or burning can occur, so use a gentle cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturiser. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels, clothing, and hair. Keep it away from the eyes, lips, and broken skin, and do not scrub the area. Improvement takes consistent use; changing products repeatedly can increase irritation.
