When is autologous stem cell transplant recommended for lymphoma?

The team collects some of your own blood-forming stem cells, gives high-dose treatment, and returns the cells to help your bone marrow recover. This approach is considered for selected lymphomas, often when lymphoma has returned after earlier treatment or has not responded adequately to standard treatment. The exact plan depends on the lymphoma subtype, scan findings, response to the latest therapy, organ function, age, activity level, and other health conditions. A transplant is not automatically suitable simply because lymphoma is present.

Ask the lymphoma team whether another treatment should be used first to improve the response. Evaluation commonly includes blood tests, imaging, heart and lung checks, infection screening, medication review, and a discussion about fertility and practical support. You may need a caregiver during parts of recovery, with arrangements for transport, medicines, and prompt access to the transplant unit. Read the transplant plan carefully, including expected monitoring and possible effects such as infection risk, mouth irritation, nausea, and fatigue.

During transplant care, contact the transplant unit promptly for fever, chills, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, new confusion, severe diarrhoea, bleeding, or inability to drink. After discharge, follow the team’s temperature and infection instructions because lowered blood counts can make an infection worsen quickly. New or worsening symptoms before conditioning should also be reported, as they may change the timing of treatment.
