When is autologous stem cell transplant recommended for hodgkin lymphoma?

Your own blood-forming stem cells are collected and stored before high-dose treatment. That treatment targets lymphoma cells but also suppresses marrow function. The stored cells are then returned to help the marrow make new blood cells while recovery takes place.

Doctors usually consider this approach after the lymphoma has responded to a treatment used to reduce the active disease. They review scans, previous medicines, response, blood counts, organ function, infections, age, fitness, fertility priorities, and available support. Other treatments may be discussed if transplant is not suitable or the disease does not respond as hoped.

Ask about the collection process, a central line, mobilisation medicines, conditioning, hospital or outpatient arrangements, fertility preservation, vaccinations, and the caregiver role. Arrange transport, help with meals and medicines, and a plan for contacting the unit before admission.

Keep the transplant team informed about fever, dental problems, new medicines, recent infections, and changes in your ability to manage daily activities. Follow food, hygiene, and visitor guidance during the period of low immunity.

Call the transplant unit promptly for fever, chills, bleeding, severe mouth sores, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, reduced urine, new rash, confusion, or breathing difficulty. After discharge, follow the unit’s specific instructions because infection can worsen quickly when blood counts are low.

Ask: Has my lymphoma responded enough to proceed? How will stem cells be collected and stored? What is the intended timing? Which side effects need emergency help? How will fertility, infection prevention, and nutrition be managed? What options exist if transplant is delayed or unsuitable?
