When is anticoagulation management recommended for atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation can allow blood to move less effectively through the upper chambers of the heart, which can permit a clot to form. Clinicians review factors such as age, previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, vascular disease, kidney or liver problems, and bleeding history. The decision is personalised and should be revisited when health or medicines change.

Take the prescribed anticoagulant at the scheduled time and do not double a missed dose unless your care team gives that instruction. Tell every doctor, dentist, and pharmacist that you take it. Check before starting painkillers, supplements, or herbal products, because some increase bleeding risk or alter medicine levels. Keep follow-up appointments so kidney function, bleeding symptoms, interactions, and the treatment plan can be reviewed.

Get urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting or coughing blood, black stools, a severe headache, fainting, new weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, or a head injury while taking an anticoagulant. Do not stop treatment on your own after a minor bruise; contact the prescribing team for advice.
