Syphilis can change over time and may cause a painless sore, a rash, swollen glands or no noticeable symptoms. Blood tests and an examination help confirm infection and establish which stage or pattern of illness is present. Antibiotic choice and schedule depend on that assessment, pregnancy status, allergy history and possible involvement of the eyes, ears or nervous system. Treatment can stop the infection from progressing, but previous damage may need separate care. A positive result does not identify when transmission occurred without further clinical context.

Contact a sexual-health clinician promptly if you have a positive test, a compatible sore or rash, or a partner diagnosed with syphilis. Attend every planned treatment and follow-up appointment. Avoid sexual contact until a clinician confirms when it is safe, and tell recent partners so they can receive confidential testing and advice. Use prescribed treatment exactly as directed and report a new reaction, fever or worsening symptoms. If you are pregnant, seek care promptly because treatment planning protects both you and the developing baby.

Seek urgent assessment for vision changes, eye pain, hearing loss, severe headache, weakness, confusion, trouble walking or other new neurological symptoms.
