When is antibiotic treatment recommended for strep throat?

Strep throat commonly presents with a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, swollen neck glands and inflamed tonsils. Cough, hoarseness or a runny nose can point toward a viral illness, but symptoms overlap, so appearance alone may not settle the diagnosis. A throat swab or rapid test may be used alongside an examination. Antibiotics treat the streptococcal bacteria and can reduce transmission and the chance of certain complications. They do not help a viral sore throat.

Seek a medical assessment if a severe sore throat makes drinking difficult, symptoms are not settling, or strep throat is suspected after close contact. If prescribed an antibiotic, take it at the instructed times and complete the prescribed course unless your clinician changes it. Rest, drink cool or warm fluids, and use suitable pain relief according to the label or medical advice. Wash hands, avoid sharing drinks and replace close-contact habits while you are unwell. Never take another person’s antibiotics.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, neck swelling or trouble opening the mouth. Seek prompt review if dehydration develops, a rash appears with marked illness, or symptoms worsen despite treatment. These features can signal airway trouble or a complication requiring examination.
