When is antibiotic treatment recommended for amoebiasis?

Amoebiasis is caused by a parasite and may affect the bowel or, less commonly, other organs. Diarrhoea, cramps or blood in stool can have several causes, so symptoms alone cannot select the right medicine. Testing a stool sample and assessing the illness helps distinguish amoebiasis from other infections. Treatment may require medicine that acts on organisms in tissues and a further medicine to clear organisms remaining in the bowel. The choice depends on pregnancy, age, other illnesses, medicines and local clinical advice.

Arrange medical review for ongoing diarrhoea, blood or mucus in stool, abdominal pain, or suspected exposure through unsafe food or water. Drink suitable fluids to reduce dehydration and follow food-safety and handwashing measures. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine when there is blood or fever. If prescribed treatment, complete the plan and ask whether repeat testing or treatment for household contacts is needed.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, very little urine, heavy rectal bleeding, or a high fever with marked weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed for pain under the right ribs, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or breathing symptoms, because amoebiasis can rarely involve organs beyond the bowel.
