When is antibiotic treatment recommended for acute bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis commonly follows a viral respiratory infection. Cough, mucus, chest discomfort and tiredness can continue while the airways settle, and coloured mucus alone does not prove that antibiotics are needed. A clinician may reassess the diagnosis if symptoms are unusually severe, worsening, prolonged, or suggest pneumonia, whooping cough, or another bacterial illness. Antibiotics do not treat viruses and can cause side effects or contribute to resistance.

Contact a clinician promptly for worsening breathing, dehydration, or a cough that is not improving.
