Hot tub folliculitis, also called Pseudomonas or pool folliculitis, can appear as itchy or tender red bumps and pustules around hairs after bathing in warm water. The rash may affect areas covered by a swimsuit. Many mild episodes settle with supportive care, but the appearance alone cannot confirm the cause or show whether a particular antibiotic will help.

A clinician considers when the exposure occurred, how the rash is changing, whether fever is present, and whether there are other medical risks. If treatment is needed, the medicine should match the suspected bacteria and the person’s allergies and health history. Avoid using an old prescription from a different skin problem.

Stop using the suspected hot tub, pool, or spa until its water quality has been checked and the rash has cleared.
