When is anti-inflammatory medication recommended for whiplash?

Whiplash can strain muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues in the neck. An anti-inflammatory medicine can reduce pain and inflammation while the neck settles, but it does not repair an injured structure or replace assessment. A clinician may consider your symptoms, examination findings, stomach and kidney health, blood pressure, allergies, pregnancy status, and current medicines before recommending it. Some people need a different pain-relief approach.

Use the medicine only as directed on its label or by your clinician, and do not combine products that contain the same anti-inflammatory ingredient. Gentle neck movement within comfort is often preferable to keeping the neck completely still for a prolonged period. Follow any advice about heat, activity, driving, and follow-up. Stop and seek advice if you develop stomach pain, black stools, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or another suspected medicine reaction.

Arrange prompt medical assessment after a neck injury if pain is severe or worsening, movement is markedly restricted, or symptoms travel into an arm. Seek urgent care for new weakness, numbness that is spreading, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe headache, confusion, fainting, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Ask which medicine is suitable for you, how long to use it, and whether it can be taken with your regular prescriptions. Ask what symptoms would mean the dose should be stopped, whether you need an examination or imaging, and which neck movements or activities are appropriate during recovery.
