When is anti-inflammatory medication recommended for rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease that commonly affects several joints, often with prolonged morning stiffness and swelling. Anti-inflammatory medicine can make movement more comfortable while a disease-modifying treatment plan takes effect or is adjusted. It controls symptoms but does not by itself replace treatment aimed at limiting ongoing inflammation.

Before treatment, discuss stomach ulcers, kidney problems, blood pressure, heart disease, asthma reactions, pregnancy plans and medicines such as blood thinners. Follow the prescribed schedule and avoid taking extra pain or anti-inflammatory products without advice. Gentle movement and hand or joint exercises may support function, but rest a severely inflamed joint.

Contact your rheumatology team if several joints remain swollen, morning stiffness is increasing, fatigue is limiting daily tasks, or the medicine causes troublesome effects. Seek urgent care for fever with a hot joint, sudden chest symptoms, black stools, vomiting blood, facial swelling or difficulty breathing.
