When is anti-inflammatory medication recommended for herniated disc?

A herniated disc occurs when disc material extends beyond its usual boundary and may irritate a nearby nerve. Pain can travel down an arm or leg depending on the spinal level, with tingling, numbness or weakness. Anti-inflammatory medicine may calm inflammation around the irritated nerve, but it does not physically put the disc back in place.

Ask a clinician or pharmacist to check your history of ulcers, kidney or heart disease, high blood pressure, pregnancy, asthma reactions and medicine interactions. Take only the advised product and amount, and avoid doubling up with another anti-inflammatory drug. Gentle activity, comfortable position changes and physiotherapy may help restore movement; prolonged bed rest can make stiffness harder to overcome.

Seek urgent care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or inner thighs, rapidly increasing weakness, or difficulty walking. Prompt assessment is also needed after major injury, with fever or unexplained illness, or when pain is severe and escalating. These features can signal a problem that medicine alone cannot address.
