When is antenatal care recommended for varicose veins in pregnancy?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that can appear in the legs, vulva, or around the pelvis during pregnancy. Pressure from the growing uterus and pregnancy-related changes in blood flow can make veins more visible or uncomfortable. Antenatal visits provide an opportunity to examine symptoms, discuss movement and comfort measures, and check whether a different problem could be causing one-sided swelling or pain.

Mention new or worsening veins at an antenatal appointment, particularly if they interfere with walking, sleep, or daily activities. Gentle movement, avoiding long periods of standing or sitting, raising the legs when resting, and lying on your side may ease pressure for some people. Ask your clinician whether maternity compression garments are suitable and how they should fit. Do not massage a tender, hot, or suddenly swollen area before it has been assessed.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness, or significant pain, especially if it appears with chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, or faintness. These symptoms can indicate a blood clot or another urgent condition. Heavy bleeding from a vein, skin ulceration, or rapidly worsening pain also needs prompt clinical advice.

Ask whether the vein changes look pregnancy-related, which compression option is appropriate, how to stay active safely, and which changes should be reported the same day.
