When is antenatal care recommended for hyperemesis gravidarum?

Hyperemesis gravidarum is severe pregnancy sickness that can make it hard to keep fluids, food, or medicines down. Antenatal care brings pregnancy checks together with support for hydration, nutrition, symptom relief, and the wellbeing of you and your baby. The plan may change as symptoms improve or return; needing extra visits does not mean that a particular pregnancy outcome is expected.

Contact your maternity team or obstetric clinician promptly if vomiting is persistent, you cannot keep fluids down, or home measures are not enough. They can assess dehydration, weight change, urine findings, and whether treatment by mouth is working. Take prescribed medicines as directed, keep small sips available if tolerated, and bring a list of medicines and symptoms to each appointment. Ask how follow-up will cover both sickness treatment and routine pregnancy checks.

Seek urgent maternity or emergency help if you are unable to drink, pass very little urine, feel faint or confused, have severe weakness, vomit blood, develop severe abdominal pain, or notice vaginal bleeding. These signs can indicate a problem needing same-day assessment. Do not wait for a routine antenatal appointment when you feel acutely unwell.
