When is antenatal care package recommended for gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes means blood glucose is higher than the pregnancy team would like during pregnancy. It can be present without noticeable symptoms, so screening and follow-up matter even when you feel well. Antenatal care may include reviewing home readings, food and activity patterns, medicines when needed, blood pressure, fetal growth, and plans for birth. The schedule is individual and may change as pregnancy progresses.

Use your glucose meter as instructed and record readings with meals, activity, and any symptoms. Bring the record to appointments so the team can see patterns rather than one isolated result. Follow the meal plan provided for you, keep appointments, and take prescribed medicine at the stated times. Do not skip meals, make major diet changes, or alter medicine doses without advice.

Contact your maternity or diabetes team promptly if readings repeatedly fall outside your agreed targets, you cannot keep fluids down, or you have symptoms of very high or low glucose such as marked thirst, frequent urination, sweating, shaking, confusion, or unusual drowsiness. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe confusion, or difficulty breathing. Reduced fetal movement also needs prompt maternity advice.
