When is anomaly scan recommended for neural tube defects?

Neural tube defects develop when the early structure that forms the brain and spinal cord does not close as expected. During the detailed ultrasound, the sonographer examines the fetal head, brain structures, spine, abdomen, limbs, placenta, and fluid. The view can be affected by fetal position, movement, body shape, or an early gestational estimate, so an incomplete view does not automatically mean an abnormality.

Attend the scan when your maternity team schedules it and bring information about your pregnancy dates and medical history. The examination is performed over the abdomen with gel and may take longer if the baby is not in a suitable position. If the sonographer cannot see an area clearly, you may be offered another scan. A possible finding is usually reviewed with a fetal-medicine specialist, who may discuss further imaging or diagnostic tests.

Contact your maternity team if you have not been offered the detailed scan, cannot attend the planned appointment, or are unsure of your pregnancy dates. Seek urgent pregnancy care for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leakage, or reduced fetal movement when your maternity team has told you to monitor it. These symptoms are separate from what an ultrasound can detect.

Ask what parts of the brain and spine will be assessed, whether the view was complete, and when you will receive the report. If something needs checking, ask what the finding may mean, which specialist will explain it, and whether follow-up imaging or testing is advised.
