When is allergy testing recommended for anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency, and testing is not performed during the reaction. A specialist reviews what happened, how quickly symptoms appeared, what was eaten or taken, and any possible insect exposure. Skin or blood tests may be selected for a suspected trigger. Results are interpreted with the event history because a test can show sensitisation without proving that it caused the reaction.

Attend the recommended allergy appointment and take the emergency department record, medicine list, packaging or photographs of suspected products, and a written timeline if available. Until reviewed, follow the temporary avoidance advice you were given and make sure close contacts know how to respond. Ask about an emergency action plan, prescribed adrenaline equipment, and when it should be used.

Use the emergency plan and seek immediate help if symptoms return, particularly throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, collapse, or widespread hives with vomiting. Do not wait for allergy testing during a new reaction; emergency treatment comes first.
