When Is Allergy Medication Recommended for Insect Bites and Stings?

A bite or sting can cause a limited reaction at the skin, including redness, warmth, pain, itching, or swelling. Some reactions become larger over time and may involve a wider area. Allergy medicine can sometimes ease itch or hives, but it does not remove a retained stinger, treat infection, or replace emergency treatment for a severe allergic reaction.

Move away from the insect and, if a visible stinger remains, remove it carefully without squeezing the venom sac. Wash the area, use a cool compress, and avoid scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on a suitable tablet or cream, taking account of age, pregnancy, other medicines, and the location of the reaction. Keep a record of the insect and your symptoms if the reaction was unusual.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms after a bite or sting. Seek medical review for a sting in the mouth or throat, many stings, increasing pain and warmth, pus, fever, or swelling near the eye.
