When Is Allergy Medication Recommended for Allergic Conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis affects the surface of the eye after exposure to an allergen. Itching is a particularly useful clue; burning, watery discharge, redness, and puffy eyelids can also occur. Medicine can reduce the allergic response, but the suitable option depends on whether symptoms are occasional or persistent, whether one or both eyes are involved, and whether you use contact lenses or have another eye condition.

Limit contact with the suspected trigger, avoid rubbing your eyes, and wash your hands after outdoor exposure. A clinician or pharmacist can help choose an eye drop, tablet, or another approach and explain how to use it. Do not share eye drops, and check whether a product is suitable for children, pregnancy, contact-lens use, or other medicines.

Seek urgent medical care for severe eye pain, sudden vision change, marked light sensitivity, an eye injury, or swelling of the lips or tongue with breathing difficulty.
