When is acid reflux medication recommended for peptic ulcer?

A peptic ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. Stomach acid can irritate the sore and contribute to burning or gnawing pain, nausea, and discomfort around meals. Acid-reducing medicine lowers that irritation and supports the body's healing process. It does not remove every cause: H. pylori infection may need specific treatment, while anti-inflammatory pain medicines may need review or replacement. Your clinician may also assess whether the ulcer needs further investigation.

Follow the prescribed dose and timing, and complete any additional treatment aimed at the ulcer's cause. Tell your clinician about pain medicines, steroids, anticoagulants, supplements, allergies, pregnancy, and kidney or liver disease. Avoid starting anti-inflammatory painkillers for ongoing pain without advice. Ask how to manage missed doses and whether follow-up is needed. If symptoms improve, continue only for the period advised; stopping or extending treatment should be discussed when an ulcer has been diagnosed.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, black sticky stools, sudden severe abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, fainting, marked weakness, or confusion. Contact a clinician promptly if pain persists, vomiting prevents fluids or medicines, or swallowing becomes difficult. These signs can indicate bleeding or another complication and need assessment rather than extra acid medicine.
