When is acid reflux medication recommended for gastritis?

Gastritis means inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining. Some people notice burning, discomfort after meals, nausea, belching, or acid moving up towards the throat. Medicines that reduce or neutralise stomach acid can ease acid-related symptoms and give irritated tissue a chance to settle, but they do not treat every cause of gastritis. Infection, pain-relieving medicines, alcohol, and other triggers may require different steps. A clinician may therefore review your medicines and symptoms before recommending a product or course.

Take the medicine exactly as directed and check whether it should be used before food or at another time. Tell your clinician about pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, allergies, and all medicines or supplements because acid medicines can affect how some treatments work. Avoid taking extra doses for persistent symptoms without advice. Smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and limiting foods or drinks that clearly trigger burning may also help. If symptoms continue, arrange a review rather than extending self-treatment indefinitely.

Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, chest pain, trouble swallowing, or repeated vomiting. Arrange medical review for unexplained weight loss, ongoing symptoms, anaemia symptoms such as unusual tiredness, or pain that does not improve. These features need assessment because acid relief alone may not address the underlying problem.
