When Is Abscess Drainage Recommended for Cellulitis?

Cellulitis is an infection spreading through the deeper layers of skin and soft tissue. It commonly causes warmth, tenderness, swelling, and redness, but those features do not by themselves show that pus is present. An abscess is a contained collection, often felt as a softer or fluctuant area within or beside the cellulitis.

A clinician may use examination and, when needed, ultrasound to look for a collection. If one is found, opening and emptying it can be considered. Cellulitis around the collection may still need prescribed medicine and follow-up because drainage does not treat every part of the surrounding infection.

Have spreading, warm, painful redness assessed rather than trying to drain it yourself. Marking the edge of redness with a pen can help show whether it is extending, but it does not replace medical review. Keep the skin clean and covered if it is leaking, wash hands after contact, and do not share towels or clothing.

Give the clinician a complete history, including fever, recent wounds or bites, diabetes, immune conditions, allergies, and current medicines. If treatment is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and attend the recommended review, especially if the redness continues to expand.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, chills, red streaks, blistering, skin turning dark, or reduced movement near the infection. Go to emergency care if you are confused, faint, breathing quickly, or severely unwell. Cellulitis involving the face, hand, genitals, or an area near a joint warrants early review.

Ask whether the examination suggests cellulitis alone or an abscess as well, whether imaging is useful, and how quickly improvement should begin. Clarify wound care if drainage is performed and which symptoms mean you should return sooner.
