When Is Abscess Drainage Recommended for Boils?

A boil is a tender infection around a hair follicle. As pus collects beneath the skin, pressure can cause throbbing pain, warmth and swelling. Some small boils open and heal with supportive care, while a deeper or larger collection may not improve until the pus is released.

A clinician first examines the lump and surrounding skin. Drainage is a procedure, not a task to perform by squeezing or cutting at home; those actions can spread infection and injure nearby tissue.

Use warm, clean compresses and keep the area covered if it drains. Wash your hands before and after touching it, do not share towels, and avoid pressing or puncturing the lump. A clinician may clean and numb the area before drainage, then explain dressing care and whether further treatment is needed.

Arrange prompt review for a rapidly enlarging, very painful or spreading red swelling, a boil on the face, or repeated boils. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, weakness, red streaks, confusion or feeling seriously unwell. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should seek advice early.
