Vaginal delivery if you prefer a female clinician

A maternity team may include a midwife, obstetrician, anaesthetist, nurses and other trained staff. You can explain your preference early and ask the hospital how it records and communicates it. A female clinician may be available for routine appointments or planned care, while labour can involve an on-call team. If an urgent concern affects you or your baby, timely care may require the clinician who is immediately available. You can still request privacy, a chaperone, clear explanations and consent before examinations whenever circumstances allow.

Tell your maternity provider about the preference at booking visits and include it in your birth plan. Ask whether female midwives or doctors can provide antenatal care, who may attend the birth, and how handover works between shifts. Discuss your support person, interpreter needs, examination preferences, and who can explain procedures. Bring the plan to the hospital, but keep it flexible because labour can change quickly. A support person can remind the team of your wishes when you are focused on contractions.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for heavy bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement, fluid leaking before labour, or regular painful contractions before your expected time. Do not delay assessment while waiting for a particular clinician. Tell the team about your preference on arrival, then allow urgent evaluation to proceed.

Ask how your preference is documented, whether a female clinician can be requested for examinations, and what happens if the preferred person is unavailable. Ask who will explain consent, pain relief and assisted delivery if those choices arise.
