What to know about threadworms in children

Threadworms, also called pinworms, are small worms that live in the bowel. At night, female worms lay eggs around the anus, causing itching and restless sleep. Scratching can transfer eggs to fingers, under fingernails, clothing, bedding, toys, and surfaces. A child may have no obvious worm, while another may see fine white worms around the anus or in the stool.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician which treatment is suitable for the child's age and household. Follow the dosing instructions and any advice about a repeat dose. Treating household members may be advised because reinfection is common. Wash hands after toileting and before meals, keep nails short, discourage nail biting, shower in the morning, and wash sleepwear, towels, and bedding regularly. Do not shake bedding indoors.

Seek advice if itching continues after correctly following treatment and hygiene measures, if the skin becomes sore or infected, or if sleep and daytime behaviour are badly affected. Arrange review for persistent tummy pain, weight concerns, vaginal irritation, or worms in a child who is too young for the usual medicine. Severe pain, vomiting, or a swollen abdomen needs urgent assessment.
