What to know about shoulder dislocation in CrossFit athletes

How the structures involved in Shoulder Dislocation differ from normal

Short answer

A shoulder dislocation needs prompt medical assessment, careful reduction by a trained clinician, and staged rehabilitation before CrossFit returns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

A dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone moves out of the shoulder socket, often after a fall, collision, or forceful position overhead. The shoulder may look out of place, feel intensely painful, and become difficult to move. Muscles, ligaments, the joint lining, nerves, or nearby bone can also be injured. CrossFit movements such as kipping pull-ups, snatches, jerks, handstand work, and deep overhead positions can challenge a recovering shoulder, especially if control and strength are not restored.

What you can do

Keep the arm supported in the position advised by the treating clinician and do not try to force the joint back into place. After reduction, follow the prescribed protection and exercise plan. Rehabilitation commonly progresses from comfortable motion to rotator-cuff and shoulder-blade control, then strength, load tolerance, and sport-specific drills. Tell your physiotherapist exactly which lifts and skills you train so progression reflects overhead stability, fatigue, and movement speed. Resume only when the clinical team confirms that the shoulder is ready.

When to seek care

Seek emergency care for a suspected first-time dislocation, a visibly deformed shoulder, severe pain, or inability to move the arm. Urgent assessment is also needed for a cold or pale hand, new numbness, weakness, worsening swelling, or pain after the shoulder has been reduced. Repeated slipping, apprehension in overhead positions, or persistent loss of motion requires follow-up rather than self-directed training.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what structures were injured, how long protection should last, which exercises are allowed, and what milestones govern return to pressing, pulling, and kipping. Ask how recurrence risk will be monitored and what to do if the shoulder feels unstable.

Questions people ask

Can I reduce a dislocated shoulder myself?

No. Trying to manipulate it can worsen injury to bone, blood vessels, or nerves. Keep it supported and obtain urgent medical care.

When can I return to CrossFit?

Return depends on healing, movement, strength, stability, and sport-specific control. Follow a staged plan agreed with your clinician and physiotherapist.
