What to know about scabies treatment in children

Scabies is caused by mites that burrow into the outer skin and spread through prolonged close contact. Children may have intense itching, often worse at night, with small bumps or burrows. Infants and young children can have involvement of the scalp, face, palms, or soles, areas that may be less typical in adults. Itching can continue for a while after successful treatment because the skin is still reacting. Ongoing new burrows or fresh bumps need medical review rather than repeated self-treatment.

Use only a medicine recommended for the child’s age, weight, and health. Apply it exactly as instructed, including the advised areas and contact time; missing skin or washing it off early can reduce treatment success. Keep the child’s nails short and use clean clothing after treatment. Wash or seal recently used clothing, bedding, and towels according to clinical advice. Household members and other close contacts may need assessment or treatment together to prevent the infestation returning. Do not use veterinary products or adult medicine without a clinician’s direction.

Contact a clinician promptly for an infant, a child with widespread crusting, or a child with broken skin and signs of infection such as pus, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or fever. Seek urgent help if the child is very unwell, unusually sleepy, or struggling to breathe after a product is applied. Arrange review when itching remains severe, new burrows appear, or treatment was difficult to apply. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and adjust the plan safely.
