What to know about razor bumps in skin of colour

Short answer
Razor bumps are inflamed hair follicles caused by hairs re-entering the skin after shaving, and skin of colour may develop dark marks afterward.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why razor bumps happen
A closely cut, curved hair can grow back into the surrounding skin and trigger small itchy or tender bumps, often on the beard area of the face and neck. Curly or tightly coiled hair is more likely to curve back after a close shave. Repeated inflammation can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, raised scars, or a rough texture. The bumps are not the same as acne, although pustules can form when follicles become infected. Picking and squeezing increase irritation and mark formation.
How to reduce flare-ups
If possible, avoid shaving very close and leave a small amount of stubble. Use warm water and a gentle shaving gel, shave in the direction of hair growth with light pressure, and avoid stretching the skin. Use a clean, sharp razor and do not repeatedly pass over the same area. Rinse and moisturise afterward. A dermatologist may recommend an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or hair-reduction treatment; do not start strong creams on the face without advice, especially when dark marks are present.
When to seek care
See a clinician if bumps are painful, pus-filled, spreading, or leaving scars, or if the neck becomes increasingly swollen or hot. Seek review when darkening continues despite stopping the trigger, or when the diagnosis is uncertain. Urgent assessment is appropriate for rapidly spreading redness, fever, or feeling unwell. Dermatology care can address active inflammation first and then discuss pigment or hair-reduction options suited to your skin tone.
Questions for your doctor
Are these razor bumps or folliculitis? What shaving method would suit my hair pattern? Which treatment can calm the bumps without worsening dark marks? Would laser hair reduction be appropriate for my skin tone?

Questions people ask
Should I stop shaving completely?
Not always. A less close shave, careful technique, and avoiding skin stretching may reduce bumps; a clinician can tailor the plan.
Why do the marks last after the bumps settle?
Inflammation can activate pigment production. Further irritation or picking can prolong the colour change.
