The appointment commonly involves health questions and blood tests. Depending on the programme and clinical assessment, testing may look for inherited blood conditions, infectious diseases or other findings relevant to the couple. The scope is not a complete check for every possible illness.

A result that needs follow-up does not by itself predict a child’s health or decide whether a couple should marry. It signals a need for clear explanation, confirmatory testing or specialist counselling. Each person’s result should be discussed privately and respectfully.

Ask the clinic what identification, documents and preparation are needed. Share family history, known inherited conditions, previous results and current medicines. Attend together if that feels comfortable, while making space for individual questions.

Keep the report and ask when results will be available. If a finding is unclear or significant, request counselling before making decisions about pregnancy. A clinician can explain inheritance patterns, treatment options, partner testing and other reproductive choices in plain language.

Arrange follow-up when the report recommends it, when either partner has symptoms or when there is a strong family history of an inherited condition. Seek urgent care for acute symptoms such as severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or a sudden serious illness; screening is not designed for emergencies.
