What to know about pre-employment medical for expat residents

The clinician usually asks about your medical history, medicines, allergies, previous operations and any condition that could affect the duties. The visit may include measurements, a physical examination and checks such as vision, hearing, breathing or movement when the role calls for them.

Bring the employer’s job description because office work, driving, construction, healthcare and other roles place different demands on the body. If you are new to the UAE, explain medicines by their generic names and bring translated records when available.

Take your passport or requested identification, appointment paperwork, medicine list and previous reports. Tell the clinician about symptoms, pregnancy, long-term conditions and workplace exposures. Ask what happens after the assessment and whether any finding needs a separate consultation.

Continue prescribed treatment unless a clinician gives different instructions. Wear comfortable clothing if movement or examination is expected, and ask for clarification if a form or medical term is unfamiliar. Honest answers help match precautions to the actual job.

A pre-employment appointment is not a substitute for urgent care. Seek immediate help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness or a serious injury.
