Nipple thrush refers to suspected yeast involvement of the nipple or breast during breastfeeding. Pain may feel burning, shooting, or deep and may continue after a feed. The nipple can look pink, glossy, cracked, or scaly, although appearance varies. A baby may have white patches in the mouth that do not wipe away. Nipple damage, dermatitis, vasospasm, blocked ducts, and bacterial infection can cause similar pain, so assessment matters.

Steps while seeking advice

Arrange an assessment for persistent or new nipple pain, and mention whether your baby has mouth changes. Wash hands after nappy changes and before feeds, change breast pads when damp, and wash pump parts as directed. Keep nipples dry between feeds and avoid harsh soaps or unapproved creams. Continue breastfeeding if it is tolerable; a clinician can recommend treatment for you and the baby when both need care.

When to seek care promptly

Seek medical advice for pain that is worsening, preventing feeds, or not improving with simple measures. Prompt review is also needed for fever, a hot red area on the breast, a new lump, pus, or feeling unwell, because these features may indicate inflammation or infection rather than thrush alone. Get urgent help for severe illness, faintness, or rapidly spreading redness.
