What to know about neuroblastoma in children

These cells normally help form parts of the nervous system. Neuroblastoma can begin in areas such as the adrenal glands near the kidneys, or along nerve tissue in the chest, abdomen, pelvis, or neck. A child may have a lump or swelling, pain, fever, tiredness, reduced appetite, or changes in bowel or bladder function, although symptoms vary and can have non-cancer causes. Tests may include imaging, blood and urine tests, and a biopsy. The care team uses the results, the child's age, the tumour's location, and its biological features to plan care.

Keep appointments with the paediatric oncology team and bring a record of symptoms, medicines, allergies, and changes in eating, sleep, energy, pain, bowel habits, or urination. Ask who to contact outside clinic hours. Treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, medicines that target tumour features, or immune-based treatment; the combination is tailored to the child. Practical support can include pain relief, nutrition help, infection precautions, school planning, and emotional care for the child and family.

Contact the oncology team promptly for a new or worsening weakness, trouble walking, severe or persistent pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, difficulty breathing, inability to pass urine, unusual bleeding, or a child who is difficult to wake. During treatment, fever or sudden deterioration needs the team's immediate instructions because infection and other complications may require rapid assessment.

Ask where the neuroblastoma began, whether it has spread, which tests are still needed, and what the treatment plan is intended to achieve. Ask about expected short-term effects, fertility or development concerns, pain control, school participation, warning signs, and how follow-up will monitor the child's health.
