What to know about narrowband UVB phototherapy in children

A child stands in a light cabinet or receives treatment to a smaller area, depending on the condition. The treatment plan is adjusted to the child’s skin response and the area being treated. It may be used for conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis or eczema when other care has not been enough. Protective eyewear and careful exposure limits help protect healthy skin and the eyes.

Follow the clinic’s schedule and do not add sun exposure or tanning sessions around treatment. Tell the team about medicines, creams or supplements that may increase light sensitivity. Use the recommended eyewear, keep the child still during exposure and apply only advised moisturiser afterward. Record redness, discomfort or new changes so the next visit can be adjusted.

Contact the phototherapy team if redness lasts longer than expected, becomes painful, blisters, or the skin peels significantly. Seek urgent medical help for eye pain or visual change, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe rash. Pause further sessions until the treating team gives specific advice.
