How influenza can affect pregnancy
Pregnancy changes the immune system, heart and lungs. As a result, flu may place greater strain on breathing and circulation than it would otherwise. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and marked tiredness. A blocked or runny nose may occur too. Flu is different from an ordinary cold because it often begins suddenly and makes you feel substantially unwell.
Contact a clinician early if flu is suspected. They can assess your symptoms, hydration and breathing, and discuss an antiviral medicine when appropriate. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before asking for advice, and do not start medicines, including herbal products, without checking pregnancy safety.
Practical steps at home
Rest, drink frequent fluids and use light clothing if you have a fever. A clinician or pharmacist can advise which fever or pain medicine is suitable in pregnancy. Keep the room comfortable, avoid smoke, and reduce close contact with others while fever and respiratory symptoms continue. Wash hands and cover coughs to limit spread. Eat small, nourishing meals if your appetite is low.
If you have asthma, diabetes or another long-term condition, mention it when you seek advice. Ask whether you need an assessment, testing or a treatment plan that accounts for your stage of pregnancy.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, signs of dehydration, or a fever that is not settling with the advice you were given. Contact your maternity team promptly for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, contractions or fluid loss. Emergency symptoms need emergency services rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
Questions to take to your appointment
Ask which symptoms should trigger same-day review, which medicines are suitable for fever or cough, whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, and how to monitor hydration and breathing. You can also ask how to reduce transmission at home and whether vaccination is recommended for you.
