What to know about herniated disc in manual workers

Back pain may be accompanied by pain, tingling, numbness or weakness travelling into an arm or leg, depending on which part of the spine is involved. Lifting, twisting, prolonged sitting or repeated bending can aggravate symptoms, but the painful activity is not proof that work caused the disc change. Symptoms vary widely, and some disc changes cause no symptoms. Examination helps distinguish nerve irritation from muscle or joint pain and checks strength, sensation and reflexes.

Pause heavy lifting and avoid repeated twisting while symptoms are strong. Short, frequent walks and changing position may be easier than prolonged bed rest. Ask about temporary duties such as lighter loads, closer carrying distances, team lifts or less bending. A clinician may recommend physiotherapy, pain relief or further assessment based on the examination. Resume loading in stages, practising a steady hip-and-knee bend, keeping the load close and stopping if leg weakness or spreading pain develops.

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, or worsening weakness in one or both legs. Prompt assessment is also needed after major injury, or when pain is severe, progressive, associated with fever or accompanied by unexplained illness. Arrange a routine review when symptoms persist or work tasks remain difficult despite lighter duties.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest nerve involvement, which duties should change, how lifting can be rebuilt, and which signs require same-day care. Also ask when imaging would alter management and how progress will be measured.
