What to know about dermal fillers in pregnancy

Short answer

Dermal fillers are generally deferred during pregnancy because elective injectable treatment has limited pregnancy safety information and may cause avoidable reactions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why timing matters

Dermal fillers place a gel beneath the skin to add volume or alter contours. The injection can cause swelling, bruising, tenderness, infection, allergic reactions or vascular problems. Pregnancy can also change skin sensitivity, fluid balance and immune responses, making an elective procedure harder to predict.

There is limited information about cosmetic filler ingredients and pregnancy outcomes. Because treatment is usually optional, clinicians commonly recommend postponing filler and any planned dissolving procedure until after pregnancy and, where relevant, breastfeeding. The timing should be individualised.

What to do now

Tell the injector and your maternity clinician if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, and share the product name, treatment date and injection sites if filler was already given. Do not arrange a top-up, correction or dissolving treatment without medical advice.

If you want to manage a cosmetic concern during pregnancy, ask about non-invasive options that fit your stage of pregnancy and skin changes. Avoid buying injectable products online or allowing treatment outside a regulated medical setting.

When urgent review is needed

After filler, seek urgent medical assessment for severe or increasing pain, skin that becomes pale, grey or dusky, rapidly worsening swelling, blisters, fever, or any visual disturbance. These signs can indicate a serious injection complication and should not be monitored at home.

Contact the injector promptly for persistent redness, warmth, drainage, lumps or swelling that is worsening. Tell every clinician that you are pregnant so medication and imaging decisions can account for it.

Questions for your doctor

Ask when it would be reasonable to reconsider filler, whether a previous injection needs monitoring, and which symptoms require urgent review. Discuss alternatives for your concern and tell the team about allergies, medicines and any pregnancy complications.

Questions people ask

What if I had filler before I knew I was pregnant?

Tell the injector and your maternity clinician. They can record the product and monitor you; do not assume a complication is present.

Can filler be dissolved during pregnancy?

Do not arrange dissolving treatment yourself. A clinician should weigh the reason for treatment, symptoms and pregnancy considerations.
