What to know about cervical screening if you prefer a female clinician

Cervical screening checks cells from the cervix for changes that may need follow-up. A clinician uses a speculum to see the cervix and gently collects a sample with a small brush. The procedure may feel unusual or briefly uncomfortable, and you can ask the clinician to pause or stop. You may also ask for a chaperone, bring someone for support where permitted, and explain any cultural, religious, trauma-related, or communication needs.

When booking, say clearly that you prefer a female clinician and ask whether the request can be recorded. Confirm the appointment time, location, and whether a female chaperone is available. Wear clothing that makes changing easy, and tell the clinic if you have pain, bleeding, or a previous difficult examination. During the visit, agree on each step before it happens and use a stop signal if you become uncomfortable. Screening is preventive; it does not replace assessment of new symptoms.

Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or pain during sex. These symptoms can have several causes and need assessment even if screening is due or recently completed. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or feeling seriously unwell.
