What to know about carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, carpal tunnel symptoms may improve with neutral wrist positioning, elevation and activity changes, but persistent weakness needs clinical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Nerve involved
- Median nerve at the wrist
- Often noticed
- At night or with a bent wrist
- Discuss promptly
- Persistent numbness or weaker grip
Why pregnancy can affect the wrist
Carpal tunnel syndrome involves pressure on the median nerve inside the wrist. During pregnancy, fluid retention and changes around the wrist can reduce the available space for that nerve. Tingling, numbness, burning or aching may affect the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring finger, often becoming more noticeable at night or when the wrist is bent.
Hand symptoms can also arise from other nerve or circulation problems, so do not assume every symptom is carpal tunnel syndrome. A clinician can check sensation, grip and the pattern of symptoms. See [Carpal Tunnel Syndrome](/conditions/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/) for general information.
Comfort measures to discuss
Keep the wrist as straight as possible during sleep and daily tasks. A properly fitted night splint may help; discuss the choice with your maternity clinician or physiotherapist before using it. Rest the hands on a pillow when comfortable, especially if swelling is noticeable, and avoid prolonged gripping, repetitive wrist bending and carrying heavy objects with the wrist folded.
Move the fingers gently through a comfortable range and change position often. Do not start medicines, injections, supplements or other treatments without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy. Mention symptoms at routine maternity care, particularly if they interfere with sleep, dressing, feeding preparation or daily activities.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity or medical team if numbness is persistent, grip is weaker, objects are being dropped, or symptoms are limiting ordinary tasks. Seek urgent medical advice for sudden weakness or numbness, severe one-sided swelling, a cold or discoloured hand, chest symptoms, severe headache or vision changes. These symptoms need assessment rather than being attributed to wrist pressure alone.
Questions for maternity care
Ask whether your symptoms fit median nerve compression, whether a splint is appropriate, and which pain-relief options are suitable at your stage of pregnancy. Ask how to position your wrists at night, whether swelling needs assessment, and when hand weakness should lead to an earlier appointment.
